Child protection: a guide for school staff
All staff in schools are almost uniquely placed to
notice and act on changes in a child’s behaviour or appearance.
This gives them a special role in the battle against child abuse
- an issue affecting not just teaching staff, but every member of
school staff who has, or could have, contact with a child. For example,
‘mealtime supervisors’, caretakers, classroom assistants and
school secretaries all have a role and responsibility to monitor
the children in their care and report any concerns.
This DVD sums up in nineteen brief, clear chapters,
what school staff need to know to give them the basic knowledge
to enable them to handle a concern about child protection. It acknowledges
the fears that staff have – what if I’m wrong? What
if I make things worse? – sums up the definitions of child
abuse set out in ‘Working Together’, gives advice on
how to proceed if staff have a concern or if an allegation is made against them, and for good measure summarises
the relevant pieces of legislation. Its most important message,
however, is that child protection is everyone’s responsibility.
No disc of this type could ever hope to replace mandatory
training on child protection; however, used to complement training,
it can be an invaluable support resource for all school staff. The
chapters can be shown individually or as a complete film, and most
importantly, staff can come back to it time after time to refresh
their memories.
